Historic Neighborhood Plaques 2.0

In 2021, WBNA installed four historic marker panels in Dexter Training Ground and Luongo Square highlighting some of the rich and complex history of our neighborhood. In 2023, WBNA received funding from The Rhode Island Foundation to complete a multi-pronged project that includes one new marker to be placed at Dexter Training Ground.

Start Date: 2023/Installed: TBD

GOALS

  1. Create space in a public setting to share the history of Indigenous peoples in Providence and to highlight previously “untold” stories of tribal contributions to the U.S. military
  2. Enrich our public spaces with informative signage and instill a pride of place
  3. Provide context and connection to past, present and future of the neighborhood

RESEARCH

Research is being conducted by Dr. Monica Ward, neighbor and Lecturer of Indigenous History at Bryant University, in collaboration with staff at the Tomaquag Museum.

FUNDERS

Made possible through funding support from The Rhode Island Foundation and Rhode Island Council for the Humanities, an independent state affiliate of the National Endowment for the Humanities. The Council seeds, supports, and strengthens public history, cultural heritage, civic education, and community engagement by and for all Rhode Islanders.
