Armory Historic District Expansion

In 2004, spearheaded by the WBNA, the Armory Local Historic District was doubled in size to include 509 properties.

Goals

  • Encourage pride of place and connect current residents with “layers of history” and those that came before us

  • Encourage preservation by making residents eligible for the Rhode Island Historic Homeowner Tax Credit, a 20% tax credit on exterior preservation repairs to encourage maintenance, as well as low-interest loans, technical assistance and project management from the Providence Revolving Fund

  • Celebrate unique built character of the neighborhood, protect the height, scale, massing, and context of the neighborhood and guide material selection and design

  • Protect existing homes that people live in from demolition and maintain affordability

  • Provide design review oversight by the Providence Historic District Commission

  • Help prevent climate change

Funders

  • The Rhode Island Historical Preservation and Heritage Commission (RIHPHC) awarded the WBNA a Certified Local Government grant through the Providence Planning Department.

What You Can Do

  • Advocate for a reinstatement of the Historic Homeowner Tax Credit program to assist working people with home maintenance, and an expansion to ensure it is accessible and equitable for all.
