1577 Westminster Street Overview

Watch the story from Channel 10

WBNA's first new construction is complete! 1577 Westminster Street is a sustainable, mixed-use, low to moderate income project. Partial funding for this project has been provided by a Rhode Island Housing Commission Neighborhood Opportunities Grant. WBNA, Inc. is also a United Way of Rhode Island 2007-2009 Community Impact Grant Recipient for the project.

The project will include affordable condominium residences and an affordable commercial space, and is designed as a “green” building showcase.

In January 2005, a design by William Kite Architects was selected by the WBNA design jury and community in a public design competition. Click here to view all the entries! Development of the final design and construction documents is currently underway, and construction is scheduled to start in the fall of 2006.

The project is intended to continue the revitalization of Westminster Street and exemplify the zoning goals of the West Side Overlay District, serve as a role model for community development and green building, and provide affordable housing and opportunities for local small businesses.

Some of the “green” features include energy efficient construction, use of recycled exterior and interior materials, use of long-lasting low maintenance materials, and innovative features such as capture of roof rainwater for garden irrigation, rooftop solar panels, and a “cool tube” natural ventilation system that uses the natural temperature of the earth to cool the stairway.
