Successful Annual Meeting: The West Broadway Neighborhood Association (WBNA) would like to sincerely thank everyone who attended our Annual Meeting on January 22, 2013 at the Paul Cuffee Middle School. We are happy to announce that we had a crowd in excess of 225 people in attendance, a record for us!
The partnership with Community Music Works (CMW), Paul Cuffee Middle School, The Church of St. Mary and our newest program, West Side Play Space, at our 30thAnnual Meeting truly illustrated how "strength in numbers" makes our community special. Our goal to reach out and diversify in 2013 had a great beginning that night and we thank these partners for their participation!
The generosity of CMW must be commended for the delicious meal that was served to all those present; we are grateful that they included the WBNA in their ArtPlace "gather" grant. Special thanks to Alana Perez, Jesse Woodbury, Alex Rosario, Ian Rosales, Ruby Espinosa, Nohely Flores, Joes Baez, Dante Luna, Lisa Barksdale, and Adrienne Taylor for their wonderful musical performances at the event. We would like to recognize Paul Cuffee Middle School Students Richard, Sasha, Emma, Alex & Cindy who were student ambassadors during the event, helping out with making sure people were signed in properly and even assisted the adults who were managing the child care at the event. These young people all represented a inspirational examination of a future generation.
The West Side community has grown in so many ways because of the strength and participation of friends, neighbors and residents like you!
Note: The Mayor was scheduled to speak at out event and yet never made it to the meeting due to an emergency at his home. It appears that even the Mayor's home is not free from the furnace malfunctioning the day we experienced that snap of frigid temperatures.
Westminster Street Decorative Lighting Access Panel Theft (UPDATE): Thank you to Providence Patrolman Charles Vieira who apprehended a person stealing the decorative lighting access panels on the night of our annual meeting. A neighbor had observed the suspect stealing the panels in Olneyville Square and flagged down a policeman. Once again it goes to exhibit that "we the residents" can assist the police with their job as we remain vigilant – "if you see something say something"
Reporting Street Light Issues: To report an outage on your street make sure you have the POLE # before you call National Grid. To report an outage or any issues with the DECORATIVE lighting along Westminster Street, please call 401 467-7950 (Providence Department of Public Works).

Fun-A-Day is a creative challenge open to all inspired by the basic premise that everyone is an artist and everything we make is art. Do something creative every day in the month of January and share it at the community art show in February. Last year, Providence joined other cities and hosted it's first Fun-A-Day, with over 30 participating 'artists', and more than 300 people at our show. This year, we will do it all again. We are looking for participants and helpers.

City Council Approves New City Law to Prevent Theft of Manhole Covers, Other Property: The City Council adopted an ordinance on January 17th to prevent the theft of public and private property containing metals. The legislation, sponsored by Council President Michael A. Solomon and Councilors David A. Salvatore and Michael Correia, is in response to the recent uptick in the theft of items made of aluminum, brass, bronze, copper, iron, and steel and other types of metal, the most notable being manhole and utility covers removed from streets and sidewalks.
The new law (ordinance) prohibits metals recyclers from accepting public property without an official certificate of release from the government entity responsible. The ordinance also creates new requirements for metals recyclers regarding the handling of certain types of private property which contain metals. Members of the General Assembly have expressed interest in passing statewide legislation modeled on the Prov idence ordinance.

The Partnership for Providence Parks is a new initiative of the Providence Department of Parks and Recreation to support volunteer groups (Friends) who seek to improve their communities by investing in their neighborhood parks. The Partnership is comprised of these Friends groups, local businesses, Universities, community organizations and The Providence Department of Parks and Recreation. Ultimately, we want to help each group grow their ability to help their park and also become part of a larger network that can pool resources, share best practices and create phenomenal parks throughout the city.

Good News!! The WBNA is in the process of purchasing 1326 Westminster Street and is applying for a grant to clean up any environmental conditions at this former gas station. In the future the WBNA will be issuing a Request for Proposals for uses that promote community economic development and serve the neighborhood within the neighborhood vision.

- Help us brainstorm “interim” uses while we wait for notification about the grant
